Officers attempted to stop the driver of a Nissan Maxima overnight, but instead, the driver opted to speed away, ultimately crashing into a Toyota Corolla that ping-ponged into a Honda Pilot on Georgia Avenue, according to authorities.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, two were hospitalized in critical condition, and two others suffered minor injuries, but all are expected to survive.

Following the crash - which left one vehicle on its side - there were temporary lane closures while police investigated and crews worked to clear the roadway.

The fatal crash is now being investigated by the Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division (IID).
